would not recommend July 21, 2010 erin I purchased this gate for the bottom of my stairs. It seemed very sturdy until it was put up. It wont retract after only opening it twice, and it sometimes refuses to come out. the material seems like good quality and sturdy but the retractor is crap. It is definately not a one handed job, it takes two people to open mine. I already have to return it after 2 days of use. Not something I would recommend to someone else!
Great option for pets July 13, 2010 chocolatelab520 We got 2 of these gates 4 months ago when we brought home our chocolate lab puppy. Originally, we didn't order the baseboard attachment, and he could wriggle out underneath, so we bought it, and were in business with the gates. I held off writing this review b/c I wanted to see how the gates held up.
The other reviewers are right - you need two hands to open/close this gate and it is hard for guests to figure out how to use it. The noise problem is easily remedied by holding the button down. I think that would be the only negative I have for this gate.
Everything else about it is fabulous, and I would absolutely buy them again. We were originally hoping these gates would last till we had kids (a few years out) - but our lab has taken to abusing them, and while they've held up REALLY well, we'll probably need to replace. They look wonderful, and we love being able to open and close them without having an ugly gate laying around. They have become very easy for us to use (with two hands). We can step over them (we are both tall) with no problem, and up until yesterday, they kept the dog contained. We (and the dog) love that you can see through the mesh to whoever is in the other room.
The reason I gave the gate 4 stars is its durability. I know this doesn't relate to how kids will abuse the gate - but it speaks to the products and workmanship. Our dog has taken to chewing the bottom of the gate. He has razor sharp teeth and has only gotten through the edge in one or two places. The big thing lately is that he is now 60 pounds and attempts to jump over the gate. And yes, it does come apart under that much weight, but it comes apart in a way that you can put it back together without having it ruined (the gate slides into the handle). He has broken down the gate 3 times and each time its a quick fix.
I'd definitely recommend as a pet gate and I will buy these again when we have kids!
terrible screws!!! June 24, 2010 E. Nelson (Coalville, UT United States) The gate itself is really great. I have a three year old so it works great to only close the gate in the part of the house where my baby is. Installing it, I was so frustrated with the first three screws because the top stripped really easily. So I screwed one in with a screw driver and when I almost finished it the top BROKE OFF!!! And these are the screws that were supposed to hold it in place. CHeap crap made in China. So as long as you put your own screws in I say this is a great gate.
Great for very narrow stairways or doorways May 2, 2010 M. Price (Babylon, NY United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Purchased this item to keep our 10 mth old from climbing the stairs. We searched for weeks looking for a gate that was narrower to fit our 28 1/2" 112 year old staircase. We thought we might have to get a custom gate made. Found this one on amazon. Took alittle while for my husband who is pretty handy to install it. Now that it's in it works great. It is strong enough to hold up to the baby pushing on it and it doesn't stick far into the already narrow space. It does make some noise when it retracts so I suggest that you open it before the baby falls asleep if you need to walk through with a sleeping child. Overall it solved our problem. Would recommend it.
Well worth it March 18, 2010 B. Flowers (Knoxville, TN USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A great solution for stairways. We have one at the top and bottom of the stairs. the box comes with 2 mounting setups so you could get away with just one gate if you felt like moving it up and down. while that isn't difficult it would get annoying. While the material is kind of rubbery and pretty sturdy I'm not sure how it would hold up against larger dogs jumping on it. For those people I might suggest to keep looking. The wife claims to struggle latching the gate while holding the baby but I have no problem with it.
