Shedding savior!September 2, 2010 RainbowEyes(San Diego, CA) Several months ago one of my domestic short hairs started shedding. It was spring, shedding was to be expected. She was shedding a LOT, so much that when my husband and I went to pet her gobs of hair would go flying everywhere and we would both end up with stuffy noses, even though we both have very mild allergies. Her fur was EVERYWHERE- even in gobs on the ceiling fan and the WALLS. This went on for months, and when I realized she'd been shedding this much for too long I got worried. When I pulled her hair just seemed to come out! So panicked and took her to the vet. He checked her out and told me there was nothing wrong with her- she was perfectly healthy, but just had a heavy undercoat that wasn't coming off with my normal brushing. He pulled out one of these babies and did a once over- I was standing there panicking and asked a few times just to make SURE that she was okay.. I couldn't believe all the fur that was coming off!! He recommended this to me, so I went home and did my research on it.
I ordered and when it came in I sat my kitties down to be brushed. Due to the reviews I was careful about how much pressure I put on the brush, and brushed like the vet did (not a normal brush). Here's the thing (IMPORTANT TIP:) you need to brush in short bursts (one or two inches, maybe more), and go back up and start near where you ended, and repeat going down the way the fur grows. You can do this in a faster motion if you'd like, just don't do it with too much pressure. If you just drag it all along the cat, I would imagine that may just rip the hair and just not be very good in general. I was careful about how many times I went over them, but never saw any thinning at all.
Lots of fur came off of both of them, and I finished up with a regular wire brush to smooth things out and get the extra out, then pet them lastly to get any stuff hanging around. Works like a charm! I LOVE this thing! Both of their coats are even softer and shinier than they were before (they were already very much so). The one that was shedding most NEVER likes being brushed, but she tolerated it. The other of my cats loves being brushed and loved this also, so no problems with them not liking it.
Over all I'm very pleased with Furminator, as are my kitties! No more undercoat making them extra hot in this summer heat, giving them digestive issues, or getting all over the apartment! 5 stars! I would recommend it to others. (However this is only for short haired cats- I am unsure how well it would work on a long haired cat.)
Works so well I bought another as a back-upSeptember 1, 2010 Andrea L. Polk(Southern Oregon) I have three dogs: a poodle, a black lab, and a long-haired dachshund. Two out of the three shed like crazy, and up until now I've resisted the FURminator purchase, primarily due to cost. Well, I've just ordered a second one because the one that arrived today worked so perfectly, I don't ever want to be 'without' again!
I took my lab and the doxie outside to try it out. Good choice... the hair was flying everywhere in very short order. The FURminator is well made, sturdy handle with ridges to prevent slippages of your hand while using it. The Large size is great as it allows for long, wide strokes on the sides and back of the dog. I don't think this would be a good choice for small dogs with shorter bodies though. Maybe a medium or small sized one?
The FURminator does tug at the hair (very small metal tines) and getting the right angle, making sure the hair is clean and free of knots or burs, is important for a successful grooming session. I wouldn't use it on the long hairs of the dog's tails or ears, but for body work, it's as good as it gets for bringing up that pesky undercoat that likes to drop out throughout the spring and summer months. I look forward to seeing how it works for the long haul at reducing overall shedding.
Both of my dogs seemed to not mind being groomed by the FURminator, unless I spent too much time in one area. There is mention in the small insert in the package about causing 'red spots' if you go over an area too much. Again, it appears to tug out the hair, and it would be unpleasant to have that in one spot over and over again.
The hair comes pouring off the dogs, even after brushing them with a traditional tool. I'm very impressed with the FURminator and if used gently, your animals should be happy with their next grooming session and you will be happier with less hair on your carpet, couch and clothes!
Works as advertisedSeptember 1, 2010 GoJo(New Mexico) Works as advertised. The smaller size 4" is more than ample for my mid-sized dogs. Both have very different types of fur, but it works effectively for both. Just need to make sure you do this outside, go slow, and be careful with "thinner" dogs or very furry ones prone to matts (one of mine is like a greyhound build) since if you're not careful, you'll be pulling the metal toothed edge over ribs and/or spine which your dog will not appreciate, or grabbing a matt (my other very furry critter) that can't effectively be removed by any brush/comb.
Totally awesome cat brushSeptember 1, 2010 M. V. Damiano This really takes the hair off the cat. I have other brushes but this is the only one I use now. I go outside and get them in the yard and let the hair blow away.
The FurminatorSeptember 1, 2010 Lamb19 This product works really well. It doesn't hurt the animal at all, it just takes the undercoat of the hair off the dog before they shed it. They need to make one like it for cats. I don't have top sweep as often everyday now to pick-up the hair left from my dog and I notice less left in his bedding and my vehicle. The Product is great and easy to use.
