Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Chic, simple. Canon looked to the very first ELPH for inspiration when designing the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, and came up with a quintessential iteration of the icon: slim, clean-lined and fully flat. Inside, the SD1000 Digital ELPH looks only to the future: 7.1 Megapixels, a 3x optical zoom and advanced DIGIC III ensure top-quality images, while focus is fast and sharp and red-eye is automatically corrected. The large and more colorful LCD screen now has a tough, anti-reflective coating that makes it as durable as it is beautiful. Shutter Speed - 15-1/1500 sec.; Long Shutter operates with noise reduction when manually set at 1.3-15 sec. Metering - Evaluative, Center-weighted average, Spot; Control to incorporate facial brightness in Face Detection Shooting Modes menu - Auto, Camera M, Portrait, Special Scene (Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Aquarium, Underwater, Indoor, Kids & Pets), Night Snapshot, Color Accent, Color Swap, Digital Macro, Stitch Assist, Movie Image Files - Still Image - EXIF 2.2 JPEG / Movie - AVI (Image - Motion JPEG; Audio - WAVE (Monaural) Selectable image resolutions - Still Image - 640 x 480 (Small), 1,600 x 1,200 (Medium 3), 2,048 x 1,536 (Medium 2), 2,592 x 1,944 (Medium 1), 3,072 x 2,304 (Large), 3,072 x 1,728 (Widescreen); Movie - 640 x 480 / 320 x 240 (30 fps/15 fps) available up to 4GB, 320 x 240 (1 min. at 60 fps), 160 x 120 (3 min. at 15 fps), 640 x 480 (2 hrs. at 0.5 fps/1 fps. 1 out of 5 stars Great until the lens jams.   November 28, 2008

I enjoyed this camera until the lens jammed. I tried all the techniques used by other people who had the same problem to no avail. If a tiny grain of sand gets stuck around the lens or if you drop it from a height of 4 inches this camera my not survive.

4 out of 5 stars A good, very small camera.   November 28, 2008

Just a few words -

The smaller the camera, the smaller the optical glass. The smaller the optical glass, the smaller the maximum camera aperture. The smaller the cameras maximum aperture, the inability to take excellent photos in lower light is lost.

You buy a small camera for it's portability, and that often means that you give up picture quality for size. This is my 2nd Elph, and like the first, it takes decent photos, but not excellent photos. It has a myriad of automatic options to supposedly make certain photographic situations easier to photograph, but quite honestly, I've tried most of the auto & semi-manual settings, and I still end up having to tweak most every image in photoshop. (Usually having to correct the the contrast levels first.)

I worked for 10 years selling film camera in a specialty camera shop. I watched as the cameras (and lenses) got smaller and the photo quality worse. (We had an in-house photo lab) The great thing about digital pics, is that you can just keep taking a shot (as the situation permits) over and over until you get it right and can delete the rest. If it's still not perfect, you can enhance it in a photo editor. But sadly, a mini camera like this is really going to only ever take it's best pictures in full sunlight.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice camera, clear detailed photos   November 22, 2008

This camera had a good rating for its quality and sturdyness. This was bought for a teenager who is hard on their electronics. This camera out performed my expectations, very nice photos, easy to use, small to fit in pocket, purse or backpack. Easy to take on vacation or just out with friends. This is our second Powershot/Digital Elph (bought one for our eldest son) and its a keeper. Thinking about buying another for ourselves when our old kodak quits.

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera!   November 8, 2008

What a great camera! Canon makes and intuitive, quality product that produces excellent results. The small size of cameras in this line means that you can take the camera anywhere you go without the annoyance of bulky equipment. I've been very happy with my purchase.

I bought a Kingston Travellite Card Reader with 2 GB SD Card to go along with this, which is very helpful for getting the photos from the SD card onto your computer. Also, be sure to pick up a case to protect the LCD screen on the back of the camera.
