5 out of 5 stars Perfectly simple   September 3, 2010
J. Luu (Colorado Springs, CO)
I'm a first time user of powerline ethernet. I just plug one end to my home switch and a nearby wall power jack, and the other to another power jack. Plugged my computer into the ethernet port and it works. I didn't even read the instruction. Works and works perfectly. I wish everything in life is this simple.

2 out of 5 stars Frustrating   August 28, 2010
Conley Porter (Santa Barbara, CA)
The instructions for setting up the "home theater" were easy enough, but nowhere do I find instructions on how to USE it! I made the connection, and it's just sitting there, because I don't know where to go from here...

5 out of 5 stars Does What It Promises   August 19, 2010
Power Engineer
I've been looking for something better than wireless for an upstairs computer and decided to give this a try. So far (one week of use) it's working great. Connecting the outlet converter into the cable modem router was easy. As others suggested, I plugged the other multi-port converter into another outlet in the same room to get them talking to each other; it also made enabling the security option much easier. The multi-port converter had no problem reestablishing the connection from my upstairs outlet (maybe just lucky with the way my house is wired). My laptop tells me I have 100 MBS which is the maximum it is capable of through a hard-wired connection, and it feels as fast. I'm very happy so far!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Plug and Play   August 17, 2010
Ozzie (Houston,TX)
I now get the true meaning of "plug and play". I opened the box, found the picture instructions and then went to my wireless router and plugged in the adapter to an electrical outlet. I used the cable that comes with the kit and plugged in the cable to the router and the Netgear adapter. Downstairs where my TV and entertainment center is I used the four port adapter and did the same, plugged into an electrical outlet and then one cable to my Dish DVR, one to my Blueray player and another to my Denon AVR. All the green lights lite up on the four port adapter and it was online just like that.
First I should have done more research. I originally purchased online an "Actiontec Megaplug" ethernet adapter twin pack. I saw the Netgear Kit here on Amazon and decided this was the way to go. It was too late to cancel the order so I thought I'll order the Netgear and return the Actiontec when it comes in. Two days later the Actiontec kit arrived and I was going to return it but my wife asked if there was a way to get rid of the wires on the Dish DVR hooked up to the phone line. I used one of the Actiontec adapters and plugged it into the outlet behind our TV upstairs and then the Dish DVR and vola, the DVR is up and running connected to the internet. So the Actiontec and Netgear kits are compatable with each other.
Now that this has dragged on long enough, the main thing I wanted to say that I haven't read on any of the other reviews is DON'T FORGET to order or purchase four or five CAT 5-6 cables 2-3 feet long to connect your devices to the four outlet adapter. Each kit came with two cables but you will need more cables depending on how many "boxes" you want to connect.

3 out of 5 stars Better that Wireless, not as good as wired, or as stated   August 3, 2010

I purchased the Netgear XAVB1004 Powerline Home Networking Kit so I could connect my Tivo, my new Home Theater PC and other devices downstairs to my router which was upstairs.

Some background: I have a 2 story 1700 sq ft townhouse. There is no networking cable run through the house, and unfortunately, its easy or cost effective to rip everything apart to run wires. I currently have a 10/100 MBs Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Since I wanted to transfer large files back and forth to my HTPC and Tivo, I felt 802.11n wasn't the best option. (Plus, I'd have to buy new adapters). Debating between Powerline and MoCa (Ethernet of Coax), I felt Powerline would give me the most flexibility, and being advertised at 200 Mbps, which is about 25 MB/s. Being that my router is 100 mpbs, (12.5 MB/s), I thought even matching the speed would be great.

I am currently transferring lots of files around, anywhere from 100 MB to 2 GB at a time, so speed is important

Setup review:
This device was ultra easy to set up. Literally, plug it in, and off you go. I couldn't have asked for a simpler setup. I am not using any encryption at the risk of slowing the system down. I'm not in a place where I have to worry about someone tapping into my powerline.

Speed review:
While transferring from upstairs to downstairs, I got a best speed of 4.7 MB/s, roughly 37.6 mbps. I will admit, this is more than double the speed of my wireless router, it is certainly not even close to advertised wired speeds.

I realize that almost nowhere will a person see 200 mbps, but I think even 50 mpbs over a relatively short distance should be expected.

Overall:
While this is not nearly as fast as I would like, it is much faster than my wireless. I'm keeping it based on the price, flexibility and easy of use. I can only hope that that Netgear will release a firmware update for this.

My recommendation is that if you have other options, and speed is an issue, then look that way. But if its casual downloading, web access, or just connectivity, this may work for you.
