Nice but nothing compared to Logitech Z-5's July 21, 2010 A.J. (San Francisco, CA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I plugged in my BassJump I was really pleased with the sound compared to my MacBookPro speakers.
Then I plugged in my Logitech Z-5's Logitech Z-5 USB Stereo Speakers for Mac and PC for comparison. And, well, there is no comparison. The Z-5's add real, actual, apartment-neighbor-noticing volume, whereas the BassJump just adds nice bass.
Don't get me wrong, if it's the BassJump or nothing, it's a nice box. Their packaging and whole aesthetic is nicely designed and executed.
But I'm either going to use external speakers at home or on the road. At home, the larger size of the Z-5's is no problem. On the road I am either traveling as light as possible (90% of the time), in which case the BassJump is definitely too heavy to take, or I'm on a longer trip where sound is important, in which case the Z-5's blow the BassJump away.
Taking mine back to the store today. It's too bad cos it's nicely designed and TwelveSouth seem like thoughtful competent guys, but I'm either traveling light or want big rich beautiful sound, hence the Logitechs. I seriously defy anyone to listen to them both side by side and tell me the BassJump is comparable.
If you're a gadget-collector or have an insatiable desire for brushed aluminum, keep your BassJump. But you can't tell me the volume boost is there - and yes the bass on the Z-5's is excellent.
First rate product, with first rate customer service! Absolutely recommended! July 12, 2010 Vishal Goklani (New York, NY) I use the bass jump with my mac mini + Apple 24" Cinema display. The bassjump handles all the low frequency sound, while the high frequency is handled by the speakers on the cinema display. This combination works perfectly, and really makes a difference in the overall sound quality. It still doesn't compare with professional speakers, but it does a very good in my small studio apartment. The customer support is first rate, as I've exchanged quite a few emails to get this non-standard configuration working.
Impressive! July 4, 2010 Roger Uratani (San Leandro, CA USA) This product is impressive. Like it has been said, this product doesn't give you "Club like bass" but what it does do is gives you a well rounded sound.
I can't believe how good my MacBook Pro sounds. I take it with me everywhere and always hook it up.
It is so impressive a girl from work wanted to know if I had a set of speakers hooked up to my computer. (I had the sub woofer behind my laptop out of the way)
The price is a bit high but I would gladly pay it again. The build quality seems very good.
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I thought it would have been nice if they would have given it a pass through on the USB port so you don't lose a port.
But other than that I am very very impressed with this product.
Flesh out your MacBook's sound... on the go! June 6, 2010 Adam S. Green (USA, India, Turkey) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In my profession, I'm constantly traveling. Several months each year, I'm working in remote locations, armed only with my MacBook Pro. I got into the habit of listening to music while I worked, but a combination of weak volume and tinny sound led me to give up on my laptop entirely and listen to tunes through headphones. I tried addressing the problem with portable speakers, but USB powered speakers always sucked and weren't much of an improvement over the laptop's sound.
I picked up a BassJump a week ago, and man, my computer's sound output is completely transformed. Instead of duplicated the MacBook Pro speaker's weak sound, like portable speakers, the BassJump plugs the holes and rounds out the listening experience. I cannot overstate this; the BassJump addresses the problem of tinny laptop speakers in an entirely new way. It's not simply a speaker substitute; it fixes the speakers your laptop already has. It also seems to amplify your computers sound, letting your fill an entire room with decent tunes. Definitely a 5 out of 5.
Additionally, the speakers are portable. And I don't mean the "small so you can take them with you" kind of portable most laptop accessory manufacturers tend to endorse. No, 12South made the BassJump truly portable. It is entirely self-contained in a sleek aluminum body with a soft rubber base that holds it in place on any surface. While it is substantial (good base requires heavy speaker tubes), it's small enough to fit in a laptop bag and doesn't noticeably add to the weight of the unfortunately already weighty MacBook Pro. The USB cord they include is a little short, but that's okay as you don't want to place the BassJump too far away from your speakers or the sound will get lobsided (it works best directly behind your laptop's monitor on a desk or flat surface). Finally, they include a very slick neoprene zipper-case to keep the BassJump in good shape. There's no reason not to carry it around with you.
To wrap things up, get BassJump to really flesh out your laptop's sound (and not simply duplicated it a la portable speakers). Take BassJump with you wherever you go, as it packs up nicely and can work anywhere. I know I won't be going into the field without it.
Gives Your MacBook Pro Needed Bass May 19, 2010 D. Blackshire 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of those products that makes the most difference when you DON'T use it. I thought my MacBook Pro speakers were pretty good. After all, the MacBook Pro has its own subwoofer, right? Well, after turning off the BassJump, it sounds like my speakers are made of tin cans and string. It really does make that dramatic a difference. It's hard for me to listen to my MacBook Pro without it now.
But it's not perfect, of course. It doesn't make your computer sound like an expensive sound system, and it doesn't get super loud. It's volume is tied to the MacBook Pro's volume (meaning no separate volume control), so you have to keep the BassJump close to the MacBook to get the maximum bass. Since this is powered by USB, I guess that's not really an issue. Also, this won't make your MacBook louder, so if you have an issue with your speakers not getting loud enough, this won't change that. Even with the those dings against it, the BaseJump provides strong bass for your computer, making a huge difference in how it sounds.
And here's a tip I wished I followed: it's $20 cheaper on Apple's site. I found that out after I bought it here. This is the first time I've EVER seen Apple sell something cheaper, which is why I didn't look there. Oh, well. Live and learn.
So for $60 (on Apple's site), it's a no brainer. A great product if you're looking for something like this.
