3 out of 5 stars Children's Ghost Story   May 17, 2010

This book is not bad, but it is not Science Fiction. That it won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards suggests that these awards are fixed. If anything, it might have been nominated for the Stoker or Newberry award. But it is not even in the same ballpark as Science Fiction.

1 out of 5 stars BORING   May 5, 2010

I feel mostly alone in my thoughts, seeing there are a mere 16 of us who give it one star, but this is a terribly dull read. And I read a lot...
There is no real character development, and how cool is it that a boy is raised by ghosts? However, I never really felt anything for the ghosts, which is what I really wanted to do. I have never read Gaiman before, and wanted so badly for this to be something that I found to be very exciting, but I'm taking it back to the library with a poor review :)

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!   April 18, 2010

I'm a tough reader - I don't like much and I often find fault with whatever I read, but I found this story nearly flawless. It was funny, insightful, charming...just wonderful! In fact, I hope there's a sequel to it. The only thing I might have found a problem with was the climax...I felt it was rushed, that we didn't get enough of the backstory of why Silas, Ms. Lupescu, and the others (who just appeared) would take on the Jacks...or where that even happened. But that's a minor detail, one that was probably left on the editor's desk for the sake of brevity. Overall, though, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Entrancing for all ages   April 14, 2010

The Graveyard Book is likely to appeal to any age, because it is effective at several levels. Preteens will get enough horror, and adults will be engrossed in the characterization. The writing is simple and spare, but not simplistic.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Unexpected   April 12, 2010

Since I find myself at a loss for the proper words, I will keep this short.

I am a graveyard researcher and YA lit enthusiast, and this book was my first encounter with Gaiman's work--and I could not have been more surprised and pleased.
The book is an absolutely astonishing blend of dark and light, managing to take what has been for a thousand years of Celtic culture a terrifying concept, and turning it into something warm, familiar and home-like. The characters are beautifully colloquial, and the story itself is astonishing. I read it through in about three hours because I simply could NOT put it down.

VERY well done, Mr. Gaiman--a true triumph in today's world of literary trash.
